Privacy Policy

Privacy · Cookies · Terms · Your privacy choices · Privacy requests

Last updated: October 18, 2026. This policy covers the Taikyoku Shogi game (macOS, Windows, Linux and future Steam, Apple and Android versions), the website taikyokushogi.com, and our emails.

Who we are

Taikyoku Shogi is made and run by Keith Adler, an individual developer in the United States ("we", "us"). Contact: hello@taikyokushogi.com. For privacy requests use the privacy request form or write to the same address.

The short version

What we collect, why, and for how long

We do not collect sensitive personal information, precise location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera data, payment card details, or government IDs. Purchases (when they start) are handled by the store you buy from (Steam, Apple, Google); we receive only the store's sales reports, not your payment details.

Online play and spectating

Your display name and your moves are visible to your opponent. Public games (found through "Find a game") are listed for anyone to watch, with both players' display names, the move count and the elapsed time. Private invite games are never listed. Please do not use your real name or other personal information as your display name. There is no chat and no voice. We may remove names that are abusive.

Who receives data

We use a small number of service providers who process data for us and may not use it for their own purposes:

We may disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or in a sale of the business (with the same protections).

International transfers

Our servers and providers are in the United States. If you are in the EU/UK, Switzerland or Japan, your data is transferred to the United States. Where required we rely on the providers' Data Privacy Framework certifications or standard contractual clauses.

Your rights

Everyone: you can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and unsubscribe at any time. Use the request form. We may need to confirm your identity (for example by replying to the email address in question). We do not charge for this and do not treat you differently for using your rights.

California and other US states (CCPA/CPRA, and laws in Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and others): you may know, access, correct and delete your personal information, opt out of sale/sharing and targeted advertising (we do neither), and appeal a refusal. See Your privacy choices. We respond within 45 days. An authorized agent may act for you with your written permission.

EU, UK and Switzerland (GDPR): access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, withdrawing consent at any time, and the right to complain to your supervisory authority. Our legal bases: performing the service you asked for (contract), your consent (analytics cookies, email list), and our legitimate interest in running a secure game server.

Japan (Act on the Protection of Personal Information): see the Japanese privacy policy for disclosure, correction, deletion and cessation of use.

Children

Taikyoku Shogi is a general-audience game and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (COPPA). Online play and the email list are for people 16 or older, or younger people with a parent's or guardian's permission. If you think a child gave us personal information, write to us and we will delete it. The offline game collects nothing.

Security

Connections to the game server and the website use TLS. The server checks every move and keeps only what it needs. No system is perfectly secure; tell us at hello@taikyokushogi.com if you find a problem.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal (or Do Not Track), we treat it as a "reject analytics" choice and as an opt-out of any sale or sharing.

Changes

If we change this policy in a meaningful way (for example, adding analytics to the game), we will post the new version here with a new date and, for email subscribers, tell you.
